Just Do Your Job

October 28, 2025 • 1 min read

I’ve had more than 5 people now asking my advice for becoming a freelancer, and I’ve had the same answer. So just posting it here.

Before you even think about becoming a freelancer or a contractor: just do your job well.

Yes, just do your day job. Whatever it is, just give it your all. Be competent.

Be an employee that your employer will want back when you’re leaving them. Or they might even try to keep you from leaving.

Be committed to your job first, be reliable, and just do the job first.

If you do this part right, the freelancing will take care of itself. Of course, there’s some marketing involved, but that’s for another post.

To quote Charlie Munger once again: “It's the work on your desk. Do well with what you already have and more will come in.”

How can I help you?

I love building websites and apps (especially with Ruby on Rails). If you're looking for a developer to build a new website, or maintain and enhance an existing software application, I'd love to hear from you.
