Ruby on Rails Development

Building websites and web-apps with Ruby and Rails is something I really enjoy and love. Since launching in early 2024, I’ve successfully completed projects for multiple clients and continue to work with several on an ongoing retainer basis. If you have a Rails app that you need to build/maintain/enhance, I can help you.

I’ve been working with Rails professionally since 2021 and as an independent contractor since 2023. I can help you add features to your app, fix bugs, take over legacy code, or build something new from scratch. I’ve worked with both startups and established enterprise companies, on greenfield projects and on older apps.

Whether you are launching a new product, modernizing an existing system, or extending a feature set, I focus on delivering working code that supports your business goals and that delivers value. As a contractor, I can integrate quickly with your team and take ownership of outcomes. All without the overhead of a full-time hire.

I typically work on a project basis or as a fractional developer for ongoing work. Most clients start with a specific project and then continue working together on a retainer basis for ongoing development and maintenance.

Check out the Write Software, Well blog which I’ve been writing since 2021. It contains over 230 posts on various topics around Ruby on Rails development.

Technology Stack

While I focus primarily on Rails, I prefer working on the full stack: MySQL / PostgreSQL, Hotwire (Turbo and Stimulus), Tailwind CSS, and various deployment platforms including AWS, Render, Heroku, and DigitalOcean.

I’m comfortable working with background jobs, real-time features, payment processing (Stripe), email systems, file uploads, and most common Rails gems and patterns.

Technical Recruitment

I also help companies hire Rails developers. The Write Software, Well blog is read by over 25,000 developers globally and it has helped me build a network of Rails developers on LinkedIn, Twitter, and Reddit. When you need to hire, I’ll source candidates from this network, screen them through technical interviews, and send you a shortlist of people who can actually code.

Most recruiters can’t tell the difference between someone who knows Rails and someone who lists it on their resume. Because I’m a developer myself, I can actually evaluate technical skills, not just scan for keywords on resumes. I’ve reviewed hundreds of resumes, conducted dozens of technical interviews, and trained junior developers. I know what to look for and what questions to ask.

You only pay if you hire someone (8-10% of annual salary), and only after they’ve been working with your team for a month. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll help you find someone else.
